UT Vols game day

Saturday in autumn turns Knoxville orange. Here is how a Tennessee home game actually works: Neyland Stadium on the river, the Vol Walk down Peyton Manning Pass, the famous Vol Navy tailgating on boats, and where to land if you are coming in for the day. Routes and traditions sourced to Visit Knoxville's game day guide and the University of Tennessee.

The spots, by neighborhood

Neyland Stadium
Home of UT football since 1921, on the bank of the Tennessee River. One of the largest stadiums in the country and the sixth-largest of its kind, with capacity around 101,915.
UT Campus
The Vol Walk
About two hours before kickoff the team walks from the bus down Peyton Manning Pass to the stadium, with the band playing and fans lining the route. Free to attend; show up early.
UT Campus
The Vol Navy
Over 200 boats raft up on the Tennessee River right next to Neyland for the home games; locals call it 'sailgating.' Visible from the riverfront even if you are not on a boat.
UT Campus / river
G10 Garage rooftop tailgate
The roof of the G10 parking garage immediately next to the stadium is the closest grand tailgate; the lots around Clarence Brown Theatre and the surrounding campus lots are the other classic spots.
UT Campus
Cumberland Avenue (The Strip)
The campus-adjacent strip of bars and restaurants where the orange flood concentrates before and after kickoff. Park further out and walk in.
UT Campus
Market Square (post-game)
About a mile from the stadium and worth the walk: downtown rooms, the watering holes, and food that is not a parking-lot tailgate spread.
Downtown

"The Vol Navy is the only stadium tailgate in the SEC that floats; Neyland sits right on the Tennessee River."

No scheduled events in this category right now, but the spots above are open year-round.

Good to know

How early should I get to campus?

If you want to see the Vol Walk and the band, plan to arrive at least 2.5 hours before kickoff. Big-name SEC opponents pack downtown lots and traffic earlier than that.

Where do I park if I am not in a season-ticket lot?

Public garages and surface lots fill from inside out: the G10 garage and Volunteer Boulevard lots first, then downtown garages around Locust and State Street, then private lots advertised along Cumberland.

Can I see the Vol Navy without a boat?

Yes, the Vol Walk passes the riverfront and Calhoun's on the River is a popular spot to watch the boats from shore. The Neyland Greenway also runs along the river by the stadium.
