Field guide · one day, done right

A perfect day in Knoxville

One day in Knoxville, the way a local would spend it: a morning on the river, the Urban Wilderness or a free museum, lunch on Market Square, the view from the top of the Sunsphere, and a downtown evening of dinner and a show. Every stop here is covered in more detail in the other field guides.

The spots, by neighborhood

Morning: coffee + the waterfront
Start downtown with coffee (Old City Java or a Market Square spot), then walk the Riverwalk or the Second Creek Greenway by World's Fair Park to shake off the morning.
Morning · downtown
Late morning: the Urban Wilderness
Drive five minutes across the river to Ijams Nature Center and walk out to Mead's Quarry; in summer, pack a swimsuit. (See the outdoors guide.)
Late morning · South Knox
Midday: lunch on Market Square
Back downtown for lunch on Market Square: Tomato Head, Stock & Barrel, or Cafe 4 with a patio. On Wednesday or Saturday in season, the farmers market is on. (See the eat guide.)
Midday · downtown
Early afternoon: the free stuff
Two free downtown stops next to each other: the Knoxville Museum of Art and the Sunsphere observation deck, with its 360 view of the city and the Smokies. (See the free guide.)
Afternoon · downtown
Late afternoon: a brewery or the river
Cross to South Knoxville's Brewery Row on Sevier Avenue for a flight at Alliance or Printshop, or grab a deck table at Calhoun's on the river.
Late afternoon · South Knox / riverfront
Evening: dinner + a show
Dinner downtown (Oliver Royale, Emilia, or Brass Pearl), then a show at the Tennessee Theatre or the Bijou, or live music in the Old City at the Mill & Mine or the Pilot Light. (See the live-music guide.)
Evening · downtown / Old City
Night: the Old City
Cap it in the Old City or on Market Square: a nightcap at Pretentious, a late set somewhere, and the walk back through downtown.
Night · Old City

"Coffee on the river, a ruby-colored sunset from the Sunsphere, a show at the Tennessee Theatre: that's the day."

Good to know

Do I need a car?

Downtown, Market Square, the Old City, and World's Fair Park are all walkable from each other. You'll want a car (or a rideshare) for Ijams and the Urban Wilderness in South Knoxville, about five minutes across the river.

What if it rains?

Swap the Urban Wilderness and the Sunsphere for indoor stops: the Muse, the East Tennessee History Center, and the free museums. The rainy-day guide has the full indoor itinerary.

When is Market Square at its best?

Wednesday and Saturday mornings in season (May through October), when the farmers market fills the plaza. First Friday evenings (the monthly art walk) are the other high point.

Every stop is sourced on its own field-guide page (outdoors, eat, free, live-music, heritage). Itinerary curated June 2026.
