Day trips from Knoxville

Knoxville is the closest real city to Great Smoky Mountains National Park, the most-visited national park in the country. Here is the practical map: which Smokies gateway is on the way to what, how long the drive is, and which is worth the detour. Distances and drive times are from the National Park Service and Visit Knoxville.

The spots, by neighborhood

Townsend · the Peaceful Side
About 36 miles (45 minutes) southeast on US-129 to Maryville, then US-321 through Walland. The gateway nearest Cades Cove, and the quieter route into the park.
45 min
Cades Cove
An 11-mile loop road through a broad valley in Great Smoky Mountains National Park, accessed via Townsend. The classic wildlife-watching drive; plan at least a couple of hours for the loop.
60 min + loop
Gatlinburg
About 45 miles east on US-441; the main pedestrian-strip gateway to the park, with the Gatlinburg Sky Lift, the Aquarium of the Smokies, and Roaring Fork Motor Nature Trail.
60 min
Pigeon Forge
Around 45 miles east, just before Gatlinburg on US-441: Dollywood, the Island in Pigeon Forge, Soaky Mountain water park, and the strip of theaters and dinner shows.
60 min
Maryville · en route
Halfway to Townsend on US-129. Downtown Maryville is a small-town stop with the Foothills Mall and the Greenbelt walking trail; useful as a lunch break.
20 min
Tail of the Dragon · US-129
South of Townsend on US-129 between Tennessee and North Carolina: 318 curves in 11 miles, an icon for motorcyclists and sports-car drivers. Not for the queasy.

"Townsend is the quiet way in; Gatlinburg and Pigeon Forge are the loud way. Both are within an hour."

Good to know

Which Smokies entrance is best for a first visit?

If you want quiet and wildlife, take the Townsend route to Cades Cove. If you want the full tourist-town experience, take US-441 through Pigeon Forge and Gatlinburg into the park. Townsend is faster from Knoxville.

How long does Cades Cove take?

The 11-mile loop road takes a couple of hours by car at park traffic speeds, more if you stop for wildlife or hikes; longer on summer weekends. The loop is closed to motor vehicles on Wednesdays in season for biking and walking.

Can I do the Smokies in a day from Knoxville?

Easily. Townsend to Cades Cove and back is a comfortable day trip; pair Gatlinburg or Pigeon Forge with one in-park stop for a slightly fuller one.
